IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roberta
Katz Sacks
March 15, 1943 – October 23, 2024
Roberta (Bobby) Katz Sacks, 81, passed away at her home in Palm Desert, California, on October 23, 2024. Bobby was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 15, 1943, to Nathan and Helen Katz. She led a wonderful life filled with love of family and so many friends, as well as service to others. Bobby married her true love Michael Bruce Sacks in 1965, though they met many years before when she was 14 years old. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Bobby adored her two children, Brad (Barb) and Leslie (Shawn) and her four grandchildren, Sophie, Jack, Benjamin and Sydney. She also relished spending time with her amazing older sister, Judy (Richard). Bobby is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, sister, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends, including her best friend in life, Linda Jacobs.
Bobby attended the Ohio State University and graduated with her BA in just three years. She was a member of Sigma Delta Tau (SDT) sorority and was active as a leader in her chapter. She also served as the president of the panhellenic association. Even after she graduated, Bobby remained passionate about and dedicated to SDT. She joined the national council in 1964 and served in countless roles, including National Vice-President, Foundation President and ultimately as the National President from 1980-1984. Even well into her 70s, she served as a mentor and leader to countless younger women. Her legacy at SDT inspired both her daughter and granddaughter to serve as chapter presidents. Many of her lifelong friends were part of her SDT circle.
As a young college graduate, Bobby began her career teaching high school English. But her sharp sense of design and lifelong passion for the creative process ultimately led her to open Genesis Interiors, where she spent many years bringing beauty and color to Akron, Ohio, homes. Bobby was also committed to serving others – in particular children. She served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) in Akron, where she diligently oversaw a caseload of children in foster care. She also served on the National Board of Prevent Child Abuse America (PCCA)and was instrumental in selecting PCAA as the national philanthropy for SDT, which has raised over five million dollars on its behalf.
One of Bobby's favorite pastimes was cooking for, and entertaining friends and family, particularly to celebrate the Jewish holidays. She was the consummate host, always impeccably dressed and styled and with her signature bright smile. She made the Sacks home the gathering place for cousins, aunties, uncles and friends. No details were ever spared, and everything was always homemade, from fresh challah to brisket to gefilte fish, she served everything on beautiful and creatively set tables. She was an avid golfer, loved hiking and movies, especially the Palm Springs Film festival. Bobby was selfless, stoic and always prioritized the happiness and comfort of others. Strong and compassionate, Bobby will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at Temple Israel Akron on Monday, October 28, at 11:00 am followed by burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will be sitting shiva and receiving family and friends on Monday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m., in Akron at the home of Cousin Bunny Rose (1746 Brookwood Dr., Akron, OH 44313) and on Tuesday, October 29 at 6:00 p.m. in Cleveland at home of Barb and Brad Sacks (15800 S. Woodland Rd., Shaker Heights, OH 44120).
