Obituary

Elinor G Borodkin, 102 years and 7 months old, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025 in Akron, Ohio. Born in Newark, New Jersey to the late Sarah and Joseph Goldstein, Elinor was preceded in death by her beloved husband Samuel and brother Paul Martin. She is survived by her three daughters Bonita Covel, Rhonda (Leonard) Kaplan, Judith Borodkin Blum, grandchildren Shana (Richard)Mantell, Simona Covel (David Amstel), Samara (Daniel) Schulman, Jay (Christina) Kaplan, Stefan(Yu) Blum, Shira (Zachary) Dubey, Corey(Amy) Blum, 17 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Elinor graduated from college in New Jersey and taught elementary school before moving to New Bedford, Massachusetts to start her family with her wonderful Sammy. She was active in the New Bedford community, started the parent teacher association in her daughters' school and helped to start the Hebrew School at the Jewish Community Center. Moving to Akron, where she became a longtime resident, Elinor continued her community work becoming President of her Hadassah chapter and being an active volunteer in the schools, her synagogue, and other civic organizations.

Always busy with family, friends, and anyone who needed her, Elinor had a special talent for making people feel good! She was always cheerful, free with advice, optimistic, and full of life. She celebrated every occasion with the family—birthdays, graduations, Jewish holidays, and so on—her dining room was the social hub for the family gatherings. When family was not able to be together, her phone conversations kept everyone close.

Her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will continue to picture her lighting Shabbos candles, telling and retelling family stories, playing mahjong, and constantly kissing and hugging every cherished family member.
