Bernard (“Bernie”) Winick passed away on March 6, 2026, at the age of 92. He was born on December 8, 1933, in Canton, Ohio, to Israel and Esther Winick.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; his children, Todd Winick, Ileen Winick (Todd Applebaum); Stepchildren, Kip Bowes, Deborah Evrard (Jeff), Christopher Bowes (Michelle), Joshua Bowes (Barbara), and Matthew Bowes (Becca); as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bernie discovered his love of public speaking in the eighth grade, where he finished as runner-up grade school champion in speech competition. He continued in speech and debate throughout high school, reaching the state finals in extemporaneous speaking and debate during his senior year.
After graduating from McKinley High School in 1951, Bernie attended The Ohio State University. While there, he served as president of his class during his sophomore year and was active in student government. He earned a degree in Accounting, and was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma, the national business honorary and Beta Alpha Psi, the national accounting honorary.
Following college, Bernie proudly served two years in the U.S. Navy. He later worked for the IRS while attending law school at night, earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Akron.
After passing the bar, Bernie practiced law for twelve years before beginning a distinguished academic career teaching business law at Youngstown State University and the University of Akron. He received an award for excellence in teaching which was voted upon by the student body. He retired as a full-time professor in 1998, though he continued teaching part-time and taught his final class at age 83.
Among his many professional accomplishments, Bernie served as Assistant Dean of the College of Business at the University of Akron and as president of both the Akron Tax and Estate Planning Association and the Tri-State Business Law Association. He was also a member of Temple Israel and a Shriner and 32nd Degree Mason.
Bernie’s character can be summed up simply: he was a gentleman and a man of honor who deeply loved his wife and family.
